Apps for meeting people in Nigeria: how they differ
There is no single best app. The right one depends on what you want and how many people near you use it. This page explains the categories, then links to a factual comparison for each app. It is not a “best apps” ranking.
Which app should I use to meet people in Lagos?
Use the app that has people near you who want what you want. Tinder, Bumble, Badoo and Olosho are mainly dating apps with international reach. WhoDey is newer and smaller, and built for Lagos, combining people nearby, friendship, dating and plans. Many people use more than one.
How to choose: five questions
- What do I want? Romance, friends, or someone to do things with?
- Are people near me on it? A big app with nobody within your trip is less useful than a small one with people close.
- What does it show about me? Exact location, or rounded distance? See how nearby discovery works.
- How does it handle trust? Verification, blocking, reporting. See what to look for.
- What does it cost? Free tiers and paid tiers differ by app and country; check the official page.
Dating-focused apps
Friendship-focused options
Bumble BFF is Bumble’s separate friend-making app (App Store listing). Meetup is built around local interest groups and events (Meetup). WhoDey includes friendship alongside dating and plans.
Nearby-discovery apps
Badoo has a People Nearby feature, and Olosho describes location-based matching. WhoDey starts from people nearby and shows only an area name and rounded distance.
Local Nigerian options
MyPerson describes itself as a Nigerian-built dating platform, offered as a web app you open in your browser (not an app-store download), with selfie verification, filters such as state, tribe and religion, and pricing in naira (MyPerson, reviewed 2026-10-01). Other Nigerian products exist; we only describe ones whose official pages we have read.
Apps for plans and hangouts
Meetup (groups and events) and WhoDey (Ask nearby, Plans and Circles) are the ones here that put doing things together at the centre.
What WhoDey does differently, and where it is weaker
- Local first: Lagos and nearby towns are the focus, not an afterthought.
- Nearby with privacy: area name and rounded distance, never an exact location.
- Beyond dating: friendship and plans live in the same app.
- Honest about size: WhoDey is new, so it has fewer people than long-established global apps. We do not publish user numbers we cannot back up.
Common questions
Is there a free alternative to Tinder in Nigeria?
Tinder’s basics are free too. WhoDey is free to use and Premium features are currently free for everyone. See WhoDey vs Tinder.
Which apps are good for making friends in Nigeria?
Look for friendship as a stated purpose: Bumble BFF, Meetup groups, and WhoDey. See making friends in Lagos.
Are these apps safe?
Any app can contain fake profiles. Meet in public, tell a friend, never send money. See safety.
How we wrote this. Competitor details come from each company’s own pages and store listings (linked above) and were last reviewed on 2026-10-01. We describe features, not quality, and we do not repeat user reviews as fact. Apps change, so check the official source for current features and prices. Product names belong to their owners; WhoDey is not affiliated with or endorsed by them and does not use their logos. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
