Meeting people safely

Meeting new people is mostly fine and occasionally risky. Good habits do most of the work. This page has the habits, then the tools WhoDey gives you. It is general safety advice, not a guarantee.

How can I meet people from an app safely in Lagos?

Meet in a public place, tell a friend who and where, arrange your own transport, keep personal details private until you trust them, and never send money. Leave if anything feels off. A first meeting should be easy to end.

The core habits

  1. Talk first, then meet. A few days of chat, maybe a short call, shows how someone communicates.
  2. Public and busy. A café, restaurant or mall in daylight or early evening.
  3. Tell someone. Name, where, when and when you will message them again.
  4. Your own way home. Do not depend on the other person for a lift or a bill.
  5. Keep details back. No home address, workplace details or financial information early on.
  6. Watch your drink and your limits. Stay clear-headed at a first meeting.

The Lagos-specific version, with transport and timing, is in the first-meeting safety guide.

Use Report on a profile or chat in the app, or email safety@whodey.ng with “Safety” in the subject. If you are in immediate danger, contact the emergency services first. In Nigeria that is 112.

Safety advice here is general guidance. You are the best judge of your situation, and it is always okay to leave.
